Calling All TCM Backlot Members: Please Vote Warren 2018

By Cliff Aliperti Leave a Comment

Update, October 25, 2018
Well, it looks like we lost. TCM has scheduled Dick Powell movies on Thursday evenings throughout December.

A bit of a double-whammy: Warren William’s birthday falls on a Sunday this year, and TCM doesn’t really do Sunday birthday tributes unless your name starts with Judy or Elvis.

Here’s all of the Warren William that TCM is giving us in December:

Monday, December 3, 9:30 pm ET, The Dragon Murder Case (1934)
Thursday, December 6, 1:15 am ET (early Dec. 7), Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933)
Thursday, December 13, 3:30 am ET (early Dec. 14), Stage Struck (1936)

I guess they just totally bury you if you lose one of their contests. Feel free to revisit my Warren birthday posts if you need a fix come December 2.

The original article follows below …

Delirious surprise best sums up my feelings as I scrolled through the latest Now Playing email from Turner Classic Movies and came upon this:

Warren William vs Dick Powell December 2018 Vote

Oh, please make this happen TCM Backlot members!

I’m not here to badmouth Dick Powell, I’m a fan, but there’s no shortage of Dick Powell movies playing on TCM. Warren William, however, that’s another story.

You may see Warren William crop up on TCM from time to time, but it’s very often in one of his less celebrated supporting roles. Even I’m not tuning into The Wolf Man or Gold Diggers of 1933 for Warren William (well, maybe I am, just a little), but it’s an occasion when TCM plays one of his pre-Code features (rarely happens in Prime Time) or even one of his more obscure later supporting roles.

Every December the first thing I check TCM’s schedule for is December 2 — Warren William’s birthday (Warren would be 124 this year — By the way, Dick Powell’s birthday is November 14). It’s hit and miss. I believe they missed him last year and in previous years they’ve often only allotted a few hours in the morning to celebrate Warren. There was that one year (2012) that we were treated to 24 hours of Warren William during August’s Summer Under the Stars, but I think TCM Star of the Month would even top that.

So, my hands are tied–I am not a TCM Backlots member–but if you are, or if you join while the voting is still happening, please think of how much fun it would be to have an entire night of Warren William once per week around the holidays. Please, vote Warren William.
